Social and Economic Relief Organization (SERO) is an independent, nongovernmental, non-political, and non-profit organization, whose journey began in the early 1990s under the name of ELP – English Language Program and later as Ghairat Educational Institute (GEI). Founded by a network of talented and educated Afghans in Peshawar, our main purpose was to provide quality and professional education services to Afghan refugees in exile.
Over time, our services expanded beyond Peshawar and we established the Hilal Educational Center (HEC) in Kabul. HEC successfully implemented various integrated projects, includingÂ
SERO consists of experienced professionals, both men and women, who have successfully managed and led various programs for UN agencies, international organizations, and national entities over the years. They have joined forces with a specific objective in mind – to assist Afghan communities through an independent and results-oriented organization and chose SERO. Regardless of the circumstances, SERO is prepared to provide emergency and relief services and implement developmental projects in remote and inaccessible areas of the country. With its seven regional offices, SERO is capable of operating in all 34 provinces of Afghanistan. The organization has established a robust network within local communities, including community elders, influencers, and volunteers, ensuring widespread acceptance and support for SERO’s initiatives throughout the country.
SERO’s commitment to the humanitarian principles ensures that its assistance reaches those who are most in need, regardless of any discriminatory factors. However, the organization recognizes that certain groups may be more vulnerable and require specific attention and support. Refugees and returnees who often face numerous challenges, including displacement, loss of livelihoods, and limited access to basic services; children, especially in crisis situations, that may be exposed to various risks such as separation from families, exploitation, and limited access to education and healthcare; women and girls who often face specific challenges, including gender-based violence, limited access to healthcare, and discrimination; and the most vulnerable communities, which may include those living in remote areas, those with limited resources, or those facing multiple forms of discrimination. By prioritizing these groups and communities, SERO aims to address their specific needs and provide them with the necessary assistance to overcome their challenges and build resilience for any future shocks.
SERO places equal emphasis on humanitarian response in emergencies and developmental interventions during recovery and resilience periods. Leveraging the expertise of its professionals, volunteers, and experts, SERO provides high-quality and specialized services across various sectors. These include Education and Vocational Training, Health and Nutrition, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support, Women and Child Protection, Food Security and Livelihood, Agriculture, Water Sanitation and Hygiene, Shelter, Survey and Research, Advocacy, and Public Awareness.
